LETTERS FROM HEIDI AND MONICA

In January Grace-St. Luke's joined with Calvary Church, St. Mary's Cathedral and Church of the Holy Communion, all of Memphis, to send two Anglican missionary nuns to South Africa. Monica & Heidi are living in a small village outside Grahamstown simply being with, and attending to the needs of children who have lost their parents to AIDS. We have guaranteed to support Monica & Heidi for all of 2005, both in living expenses and with a gift of $15,000.

A typical day in the very poor, rural area where Monica and Heidi live:
They rise every morning at 5 a.m. and they spend two hours sitting in the Presence of Jesus. They have very few possessions, but they are allowed to have the reserved Sacrament of Holy Communion in their small room. They simply sit in the Presence, and draw strength from this intentional, conscious awareness of God with them.
Then, every day, they say the following "Prayer of Abandonment," written by Brother Charles de Foucauld:

Father,
I abandon myself into your hands;
do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do, I thank you;
I am ready for all, I accept all.
Let only your will be done in me,
and in all your creatures.
I wish no more than this, O Lord.
Into your hands I commend my soul;
I offer it to you
with all the love of my heart,
for I love you, Lord,
and so need to give myself,
to surrender myself into your hands,
without reserve,
and with boundless confidence,
for you are my Father. Amen.
